Google grants to 46 EU Code Week projects that introduce students to computer science

Publication date: October 12, 2016

While digital competency quickly becomes one of the most important prerequisites for getting a job, too few students have access to opportunities to study computing to prepare them with the skills they’ll need to be successful in the 21st century. The European Commission estimates that more than 725,000 high tech jobs will go unfilled in 2020.

At Google we want to do something about this, and that’s why we offered sponsorships again this year organisations running initiatives to introduce students to computer science during Europe Code Week.

With almost 400 applications, it was an incredibly tough selection process and it was exciting to see the enthusiasm around inspiring students in computer science all across Europe. Ultimately we were able to fund 46 initiatives in 29 countries, with a goal to reach over 25,000 students.

Google is delighted to be able to support all these great efforts, which is just a small part of the 1000s of events scheduled to take place. Congratulations to these organisations and we hope to see lots of follow up activities to engage more students to keep Code Week’s momentum going!
