Arduino Innovation for a More Inclusive Society

Publication date: August 8, 2024

Inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities and impairments in society is crucial for building a fairer and more humane community that respects and values diversity. Everyone deserves equal opportunities to achieve their full potential. Technological and innovative solutions offer numerous possibilities that can significantly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and developmental difficulties.

Technology for Inclusivity

The application of modern technologies enables the creation of a more inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities for success and fulfilment. Technology can reduce barriers and adapt the physical environment. Meanwhile, society can build a supportive environment where everyone can contribute in a way that suits their personal abilities and skills. Through the synergy of technology and social support, it is possible to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live a fulfilling and productive life.

A Student Innovation

First-year students of the Vukovar Gymnasium, David Pendić and Nikola Uglik, have developed an innovation aimed at facilitating and simplifying the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals. Their goal is to contribute to the creation of an inclusive society.

The Smart Cane

Their smart aid – a cane for blind and visually impaired persons – is equipped with technological components. These include an Arduino microcontroller, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, and a mini vibro motor.

Technological Components

Thanks to their past activities and the recognition of Outstanding Leading Teachers of Code Week 2024, and with the help of the received Arduino award, the students have strengthened their skills in programming and working with Arduino technology.

Inclusive Technology for the Visually Impaired

Educational Impact

The application of Arduino technology in education not only enables the practical application of theoretical knowledge but also fosters the development of analytical and logical thinking, creative problem-solving, and collaborative work. The Arduino platform provides an easy entry into the world of electronics and programming. And so it allows students to develop their technical and creative skills.

How the Smart Cane Works

The smart cane system operates by having the ultrasonic sensor continuously send waves into the environment as the user moves. When an obstacle is detected, the sound sensor and vibro motor are activated. The user is then provided with an audible warning and tactile feedback through vibrations. This allows users to intuitively assess the distance and shape of obstacles.

Design and Functionality

The collapsible cane for blind and visually impaired persons can be adjusted in height and size. This makes movement and orientation easier. Through its design, the aid directly enables blind and visually impaired individuals to have greater independence and safety. This contributes to the creation of a more inclusive society.

The solution devised and created by David and Nikola highlights the numerous possibilities of technology as well as a high level of awareness about the difficulties faced by people with disabilities and developmental challenges daily. This innovation emphasizes the need to create an inclusive environment that respects diversity.
