Publication date: May 8, 2024

EU Code Week took center stage at the Science is Wonderful! Fair in Brussels, showcasing hands-on activities to engage students in the world of coding and computational thinking.

EU Code Week was featured at the Science is Wonderful! Fair, which took place at The EGG in Brussels on 25-26 April 2024.  Science is Wonderful! Fair is an initiative of European Union’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), renowned for its support of doctoral education and postdoctoral training.

The fair celebrates the value of EU-funded research by inviting primary and secondary school students to engage directly with leading researchers and innovators. Since its inception in 2015, Science is Wonderful! has annually hosted a science fair showcasing research projects and innovations through presentations, hands-on experiments, games and quizzes.

The EU Code Week Booth: A Deep Dive

The EU Code Week Booth was represented by the Belgian leading teachers Ilse Delo, Inge De Cleyn and Wouter Willems, the Dutch ambassador Pauline Maas and the EU Code Week team Arjana Blazic, Eugenia Casariego Artola and Eirini Symeonidou from European Schoolnet and Denisa Boca from the European Commission. Titled “Deep Dive into EU Code Week”, the booth hosted a diverse array of hands-on activities aimed at promoting coding, programming, and computational thinking to students of all ages and skill levels.

Engaging Activities for All

The booth soon became a hub of activity, attracting visitors from kindergarteners to high school students, along with their teachers. The students enjoyed participating in the engaging activities, which included playing escape rooms, video sensing and AI games, programming robots, cracking codes, tinkering and making, unplugged coding as well as singing and dancing. In addition to that, booth visitors received small tokens of appreciation in the form of EU Code Week branded T-shirts, caps, stickers, lanyards and tote bags. This added a splash of orange to the entire Fair throughout both days of the event.

Fostering Excitement for Learning

The vibrant atmosphere of the EU Code Week booth not only showcased the importance of coding and computational skills but also encouraged an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm for learning among attendees of all ages. Through engaging activities, the EU Code Week booth succeeded in inspiring the visitors to explore the world of coding further.
