EU Code Week Teach Day 2024: A Reflection

On 9 March 2024, educators, technologists, and enthusiasts from around the world gathered virtually for the EU Code Week Teach Day 2024. This event, a culmination of collaborative efforts and a celebration of digital learning, offered a rich tapestry of insights, discussions, and practical workshops aimed at empowering educators with the tools and knowledge to inspire the next generation of digital creators.

 

Teach Day 2024

The day commenced with an invigorating morning session, where EU Code Week team member Eirini Symeonidou welcomed over 180 online participants to this day of workshops and discussions tailored to their professional growth. Throughout the session, educators explored innovative teaching methodologies and learned practical strategies for integrating technology into the classroom seamlessly.

During the Teach Day event, Rehana Schwinninger-Ladak, the Head of the Unit ‘Interactive Technologies, Digital for Culture and Education’ in the European Commission, highlighted EU Code Week’s role in boosting digital skills among youth. She emphasized the importance of fun and innovation in engaging young learners and empowering them to shape their futures.

She expressed gratitude for the ongoing support and commitment of the EU Code Week Community, especially the teachers participating on a Saturday morning in this event, reaffirming the collective endeavor to equip young girls and boys with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital era.

In a captivating masterclass on AI and ethics, Arjana Blazic shone light on the ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence. She emphasized, “Ethics and hands-on go together,” reminding us that as educators, we play a crucial role in guiding students to navigate the ethical implications of technology. She also stressed the importance of fostering critical thinking skills in students to navigate the complex ethical landscape of technology.

Educators’ role

The afternoon session brought forth thought-provoking discussions on gender inclusivity and the role of educators in empowering girls in STEM fields. Educators highlighted the significance of creating inclusive learning environments and providing role models and mentorship opportunities to inspire the next generation of female technologists.

As the day drew to a close, participants engaged in reflective dialogue, sharing their key takeaways and insights from the event. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose permeated the virtual space, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines EU Code Week Teach Day.

In the closing session, EU Code Week team member Tommaso Dalla Vecchia expressed gratitude to the dedicated team behind the event, acknowledging their tireless efforts in bringing the vision to life. He thanked the participants for their unwavering commitment to digital education, noting that “the future is ahead of us.”
