International Girls in ICT Day: Empowerment Through Digital Skills for Life

Publication date: April 25, 2024

On 25 April we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day 2024, an occasion for us to reaffirm our commitment to promoting gender equality in STEM. This year’s theme, “Digital Skills for Life,” underscores the importance of nurturing technological proficiency among girls and young women, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse future in the tech industry.

International Girls in ICT Day serves as a reminder of the pivotal role girls play in shaping the landscape of information and communications technology (ICT). It’s a day to inspire and empower the next generation of female tech leaders, encouraging them to explore the vast opportunities within STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields.

Aligned with EU Code Week goals

In alignment with the objectives of EU Code Week, International Girls in ICT Day champions the promotion of digital literacy and diversity in technology. As we celebrate this special day, it’s imperative to acknowledge the importance of initiatives aimed at encouraging girls to pursue careers in ICT.

There are resources available on the EU Code Week website aimed at encouraging girls to take up coding, such as the podcast Bridging the STEM Gender Gap, or the “Coding for Inclusion” training programme, which provide valuable support in fostering an inclusive environment for girls interested in coding and technology. You can also check out this video where EU Code Week Ambassador from Slovakia, Monika Kapráliková and EU Code Week Ambassador from Luxembourg, Madhumalti Sharma explore ways to attract women and girls to EU Code Week and coding in general.

As we commemorate International Girls in ICT Day on 25 April, let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment in the tech sector. By celebrating the achievements of women in ICT and advocating for equal opportunities in STEM education, we can collectively create a brighter, more equitable future for all.
