Unlocking creativity and coding with EU Code Week’s Apple Webinars

Publication date: September 14, 2023

Are you ready to embark on a journey of creativity, problem solving, and coding with Apple? EU Code Week is thrilled to announce a series of exciting webinars designed to empower educators and students alike. These webinars, presented by Apple Distinguished Educator Suzanne Lustenhouwer, offer a unique opportunity to explore the world of coding and app development. Whether you’re an educator eager to integrate coding into your classroom or a student with a passion for technology, these webinars have something for everyone.

So, let’s take a look at the three upcoming webinars and what they can offer teachers and their students.

Design a Simple App [17:00 PM – 18:30 PM CET – 18 September 2023 – Link to webinar].

Are you an educator looking to inspire your students to embrace coding and app design? Then why not join our webinar, “Design a Simple App,” on 18 September. This session will delve deep into the “Design a Simple App” project, one of Apple’s “Everyone Can Code” projects, which are now readily accessible in the Apple Education Community.

Certainly, this webinar will give you the resources to guide students in developing essential skills for creating problem-solving apps. Moreover, you will be able to encourage students to design an app that makes a positive impact on someone’s life or addresses a problem they care about. The process mirrors the app design methodologies used by professional developers, from brainstorming app ideas to prototyping in Keynote, receiving feedback from peers, and even creating an app product page. The webinar will be conducted in English and, while no specific devices are required, having an iPad with an Apple Pencil is a plus.

Build with Stacks and Shapes [17:00 PM – 18:30 PM CET – 25 September 2023 – Link to webinar].

On the other hand, the webinar “Build with Stacks and Shapes” on 25 September will likewise help educators integrate the “Everyone Can Code” projects into their classrooms. In fact, these projects provide educators with valuable resources to help students acquire essential app development skills.

Furthermore, this particular webinar introduces students to building app interfaces using shapes in Swift Playgrounds on an iPad or Mac. Attendees will learn how to guide students in coding their self-portraits by experimenting with shapes, colours, and placements. Thus, by leveraging these resources and their creativity, students can design solutions that can make a difference in the world. The webinar will be conducted in English, and to get the best experience, it is recommended to have an iPad or Mac with the latest version (4.3.1) of Swift Playgrounds installed.

Design a Simple App (for students aged 9-15) [10:00 – 11:00 AM CET – 18 October 2023 – Link to webinar.]

Calling all students aged 9-15! Join our webinar on 18 October where students and their teachers can explore the “Design a Simple App” project together. This project aims to ignite your students’ creativity and coding skills as they design an app that makes someone’s day better or solves a problem close to their heart. Teachers – you should encourage your students to sign up!

For instance, this session will teach your students the app design process used by professional developers. They’ll brainstorm app ideas, prototype in Keynote, and receive feedback from peers. The webinar will be in English, and while it is not necessary to have any specific devices, having an iPad with an Apple Pencil will help them get the most from the webinar. If they don’t have a device, please make sure that they have paper (preferably graph paper) ready for this interactive session.

All three workshops will be led by Suzanne Lustenhouwer, an Apple Distinguished Educator based in Amsterdam. Despite her non-computer science background, Suzanne has been teaching coding and app development to lower secondary school students since 2016 using Apple’s “Everyone Can Code” curriculum. Don’t miss out on these enriching opportunities to explore the world of coding and app development with Apple. Let’s embark on this exciting journey together!
