“We are coding”: a teacher’s story from Turkey

Publication date: October 18, 2018

I am Burcu Yüksek, a pre-school teacher from Adana working with students aged between 4 and 5. This year we decided to participate in EU Code Week.

In today’s world where pre-school education is very important, coding will help my students develop key skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, as well as information and technology literacy.

I have been working with 10 students in a disadvantaged area and in this Code Week event with various basic activities, I tried to show them coding in a fun and game-like atmosphere.

We called our activities ‘’We are coding’’.

First we started with code.org working on very basic activities and then we went on to work with Scratch JR to create simple stories.

As a final activity my students experimented with the augmented reality and the related activities I created for them.

We had a great time learning and having fun together.

Thanks to EU Code Week we love coding. And we will keep learning and practicing even after the Code Week is over.
