What do you like most about Code Week?
It is now my 4th year participating in Code Week. There are so many things I like about Code Week that it is hard to answer this question. For me a main reason why I like Code Week so much is that it is very satisfying to see that quite a few of my former students have developed a passion for coding. Their first encounter with coding was through Code Week. So it seems to work to get children into coding via the Code Week
What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn coding?
Start NOW with the attitude of a 6 year old child: take one step at a time, be curious, play around to find out how it works and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.
Which project related to Code Week are you most proud of, and why?
I am most proud of an Artificial Intelligence project I developed last year for a workshop in a Primary School with G4 kids. It was a workshop where I introduced 9 year old kids to the world of AI using Huskylens AI cameras and Calliopes. Children without or with very little prior coding experience learned how to use the camera’s face recognition algorithm and then translate the stored information into an output on the camera screen by programming the Calliope.
This workshop showed them a real complex field of computing in a way that they could “touch and feel”. The project was extremely popular and proved how such a complex subject as AI can be taught at elementary schools.
